Already BGN 2,500 on average per teacher

, but still lacking teachers in mathematics, IT, biology, chemistry

Before September 15, the most scarce personnel are in the exact sciences. About 200 are not enough for Sofia, about 1000 for the country. 3 options for principals: look for retirees, raise the standard of available teachers or one takes over several subjects
Finalizing the renovations and filling the missing teachers in some subjects – these are the two big concerns of the principals in the last days before September 15. And while most masters are already in the final, the problem with teachers traditionally remains despite the serious increase in salaries in education in recent years. The better pay and the renewed base in the schools attracted younger staff to teaching and filled the big “holes”. But it has not yet been able to fully resolve the deficit that is most palpable in the exact and natural sciences. And this fall, before the first bell, there are 80 vacancies for mathematics teachers, 35 for biology, 29 for informatics and information technologies, 15 for chemistry, etc. The data are total for the country as of August 30, according to information from the regional administrations of education, according to a report provided to “24 Chasa” by the Ministry of Education and Science. Competitions and the appointments of teachers in places are ongoing.

For Sofia, there are a total of 200 missing, and for the country – about 1000, Asen Alexandrov, chairman of the Union of Directors in Secondary Education and director of the capital’s 51st SU “Elisaveta Bagryana”, calculated a few days ago. The accounts of the teachers’ unions are similar. The problem comes mostly when a colleague retires at the end of the school year. Then the position is announced only in July and there is not enough time to find a specialist until the beginning of September, Alexandrov explained. However, the directors apply “grips”.

“The most active at the last moment are three. The first is to look for a retiree who worked at the school or you know their work at all. The other way is to give higher standards to available teachers, but especially mathematicians do not like this. The third option for small settlements is for one colleague to teach several subjects – it is possible being a history teacher and majoring in chemistry

It’s not very proper, but it’s better than the children standing without a teacher in class”, explained Aleksandrov.

86,432 are the state-appointed teachers in Bulgaria. In total, for the academic year 2023/2024, there are 95,574 pedagogical specialists (teachers, principals, educators, pedagogical advisors, etc.). Of these, 20,026 work in kindergartens.

The average age of teachers is 48 years

There are 1,478 psychologists, and 799 pedagogical advisors.

In reality, there is no longer a teacher in a school who does not take at least 2,000 BGN. According to the values determined from January 1 of this year, the minimum basic salary for a head teacher is BGN 1,985. The salary in the preschool and school education system is determined in relation to the position and the acquired degree of career development, so in reality the average is already around BGN 2,500 because of the accruals for internship and class.

Pedagogical specialists also receive additional remuneration – for mentoring, for taking part in exams, in their role as a class teacher, etc.

The minimum basic salary for a speech therapist, psychologist, pedagogical advisor with a first degree in career development is BGN 1,913.

However, in the capital, where the largest number of schools are naturally concentrated, staff are also sought beyond the “deficit” mathematical specialists.

Mathematics teacher, Russian teacher, full-day elementary teacher, physics teacher, fine arts teacher, geography teacher, resource teacher are the positions announced according to the latest
information in Sofia-city.

In Plovdiv, they can boast that there is no real deficit, because the “Paisiy Hilendarski” University trains teachers in all subjects. But still, there are the least number of people who want to teach children physics and mathematics, according to the Regional Department of Education. “For teachers in these specialties, there are fewer candidates and, accordingly, the competition is weaker. And only with high competition can we have the best teachers”, comments his boss Ivanka Kirkova. Among the main reasons is the complexity of the subject, which makes it difficult for children and makes learning more specific. The director of the English High School in Plovdiv, Nikolay Radev, who is a mathematics teacher, points to another explanation – his colleagues focus on applied mathematics and informatics, they are not concerned with pure mathematics and teaching, he claims.

There is a shortage of science teachers in Varna. It’s hard to find them in the Bulgarian language either, recently there is a lack of mathematicians as well. However, for the new school year, all the numbers will be filled, reports the head of RUO – Varna, Irena Radeva.

In Veliko Tarnovo, the biggest deficit is emerging in

the study room in the primary course and in the junior high school,

points to a vacancy report at the end of August. 12 positions for teachers in groups for all-day organization of the school day are announced on the RUO website. There are one fewer vacancies for practical and professional teachers
